Dr. Janet Jackson Answers Your Question About Feeding Tips

You asked:

Q:

I adopted our kitten Sassy from PetsMart and she was very scared when we first got her but is finally coming around to being loved on and petted, which we give her a lot of attention. The question I have is when can I start her on treats and how do I get her to eat them; she is 8 months old and very picky.

Dr. Janet answered:

Most treats can be given to kittens if given in moderation. Most treats are designed to be given as a supplement to a cat’s diet as a special treat. Thus treats are usually not complete and balanced nutrition and if too many treats are given it could lead to a nutrient imbalance or even obesity. Feeding treats to kittens is not harmful as long as the total calories from the treats does not exceed 10% of your kitten’s daily caloric requirements. Therefore, giving as many as 4-5 small dry kibble type treats a day should not be a problem.
