Picking a calm kitten
Start by getting a young kitten so you’ll know his or her history and behavior. And while there’s no guarantee that any particular kitten will morph into a calm cat, there are strategies to make that outcome more likely.
For example, you could opt for a purebred kitten: Certain breeds are known to be more docile. If you opt for a mixed-breed kitten, spend some time with the kitten and observe its behavior.
Avoid choosing a shy, fearful or aggressive kitten—one that hisses or pulls away—because he or she may not adapt easily to new surroundings. And avoid a too-rambunctious kitten—it may be too energetic for you. Instead, look for a kitten that’s inquisitive, playful and alert—one that seems trusting and confident. This type of kitten is likely grow up to be a calm adult.
