Dr. Janet answered:

In order to prove nutritional adequacy all pet foods go through prescribed protocols developed by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). These protocols were developed in collaboration with personnel from the FDA, nutritionists from major universities, and feed control officials from all states.

Purina Cat Chow products are AAFCO approved and carry the AAFCO feeding test claim. In order to have this claim the product needs to be fed to cats. The AAFCO feeding test claim is preferred since it proves the product has been fed to cats and provides the nutrients required by the cat. All Purina Cat Chow brand dry cat foods have been through feeding tests using AAFCO protocols to substantiate the nutritional adequacy for the life stage intended.
